A Celebration of Spelman Siblinghood

Lyric Eshoe

It's November at Spelman, which means the trees by Sisters Chapel are glowing a bright orangey-red hue, and the students are stressed out of their minds drowning in assignments. Upper Manley is filled with the sounds of frantic typing, and the Starbucks line is long as ever with Spelmanties trying to order medicine balls. This time of year often goes by in a blaze, trying to recover from the one-two punch of midterms while also fearing the looming beast of finals upcoming. It's rough out here!

One thing that keeps us all moving throughout this time of year is knowing that you're not alone in your struggle. Because while that 10-page research paper might be the cause of all your lack of sleep, know your Spelman siblings are going through it trying to piece together a stress free and pandemic-friendly way to finish their final film project. Siblinghood unites us in times of triumph but especially in hardships.

Today I wanted to take a moment to celebrate the siblinghood of Spelman. It's one of the best things the campus has to offer; the instant familiarity with one other solely through being here. One of the factors that made Spelman’s online learning such an adjustment was that we weren't able to interact with each other in person. Sure there were the virtual movie nights and iconic Instagram Glee concerts, but there’s nothing like hearing ‘Yass Photography, come on now’ from someone passing by as you’re trying to find your angle.

Everyone has their own story of a Spelman sib coming in clutch, whether it's someone going out of their way to help you bring in your groceries up to the dorm, or treating you while out somewhere ‘because Spelman.’ The energy everyone brings with them is always so uplighting and positive and it really is a ray of light on campus, especially during the busy months. As the days get colder and we continue to get 12 minutes of daylight a day, continue to have grace and celebrate the siblinghood of which we all exist every day and together, we will end up undaunted by the fight.
